Our Scope of Practice

At the National Association of Phlebotomy Technician Professionals (NAPTP), our Scope of Practice defines the professional and ethical standards expected of every certified phlebotomist. Built on evidence-based healthcare practices, it ensures patient safety, clinical excellence, and professional accountability.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Practicing therapeutic communication to build patient trust and reduce anxiety.
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality and never interpreting or disclosing lab results.
  • Following strict infection control procedures, including proper handwashing and maintaining a clean environment.
  • Verifying the five rights of patient identification before every blood draw.
  • Obtaining patient consent prior to any procedure.
  • Drawing blood only from approved veins in the antecubital fossa or the hand.
  • Correctly collecting and handling various specimens, including blood cultures, urine drug screens, and stool samples.
  • Respecting all patients without discrimination and applying developmental awareness through Maslow’s and Erikson’s models.
  • Reporting any signs of abuse immediately through the appropriate chain of command.
  • Always operating within the defined scope, without performing tasks assigned to licensed medical staff.
