If you are planning to work as a phlebotomy technician in Idaho, it is important to separate three different things: Idaho state licensing rules, individual employer requirements, and NAPTP® certification requirements. They are not interchangeable.

Does Idaho license phlebotomists?

As of September 2026, the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL) licensed-profession search does not list phlebotomists as a DOPL-licensed profession.

That is different from saying that every Idaho employer has the same hiring rules. Hospitals, laboratories, clinics, blood centers, and other employers may set their own education, experience, background-check, certification, or onboarding requirements for a specific position.

Because state rules can change, candidates should confirm the current status directly with Idaho DOPL and review the requirements of the employer offering the role before relying on an older article or training-provider claim.

What does the Idaho job market look like?

The Idaho Department of Labor’s current JobScape data lists phlebotomists as a statewide occupation with postsecondary non-degree education as the typical entry-level education. The current listing shows a typical hourly wage of about $20.56, a typical annual wage of about $42,750, projected growth of 21.4%, and about 140 annual openings.

How to Become a Phlebotomist in California

The state of California has some of the strictest regulations regarding health practices, and this applies especially to Phlebotomy Certification. From having nationally-approved schools and training institutes that you need to get your accreditation from, to having a strictly regulated license application process, every step in the process of getting yourself qualified to practice in the state comes with its own set of rules and regulations

Step 1: Complete your term at a state approved school

The first step towards becoming a Phlebotomist in California must be taken after you’ve earned your high school diploma or GED. You should take a look at the California Department of Public Health’s list of approved schools, and select an institute that offers the requisite level of classes that you need. While individual program requirements will vary from program to program, you should expect to put in at least some level of classroom time, as well as training in a clinical environment.

Step 3: Apply to the CDPH website to become a Licensed Phlebotomist

You’ve reached the home stretch. Now all you have to do is verify and submit the training you’ve undergone and the certificates you’ve earned at the CDPH website. After registering for an account at: https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/OSPHLD/LFS/Pages/ClinicalLaboratoryPersonnel.aspx, you’ll have to fill out the details of your medical training, as well as upload copies of your certificates. Then it’s a simple matter of filling out a few personal details and selecting the appropriate certification, and then all you have to do is wait for your application to be processed.

Do I Need to Renew My NAPTP Phlebotomy Certification?

If you hold an NAPTP® Phlebotomy Technician certification, renewal is part of keeping that NAPTP® credential current. The renewal process is separate from the eligibility requirements used when someone first registers for the national certification exam.

How NAPTP® renewal works

For the standard NAPTP® Phlebotomy Technician renewal, the process is designed to be straightforward:

  1. Attest to your experience. The renewal form asks you to confirm that you have experience in the field.
  2. Complete renewal registration. Pay the current renewal fee shown on the official renewal checkout page.
  3. Take the renewal exam. Complete the NAPTP® renewal exam as part of the renewal process.

You do not need to upload blood-draw logs, proof of work hours, or CEU documentation as part of the standard NAPTP® Phlebotomy Technician renewal process.

Initial certification requirements are different

Requirements used to register for an initial NAPTP® Phlebotomy Technician National Exam should not be reused as renewal requirements. Candidates seeking an initial certification should review the current NAPTP® exam eligibility page.

Existing NAPTP® certificants should use the dedicated renewal registration page instead.

What if you move to another state?
